Jeremy Elwood interview

This interview with Damian Clark was e-mailed to him on the 23rd of March 2000 and I got it back on the 8th of April in the same year. Just shows you how slack he really is.

So you won the first WA Fringe Festival Comedy Award...how did that make you feel?

On top of the World 'cause I've never won anything before and It's a spinout to think for that moment, I was the 'hero' of funniness in Perth.

How does it feel to be the only person (that I know of) to make Peter Holland swear in public? (for those of you who don't know, Holland is a channel nine news reader with a very good reputation).

Wow. If someone paused time and asked me what's the last thing I'd expect him to say, that wouldv'e been near the top of the list, and he said it! He's such a legend. I bet he's been dying for a chance to smash his square image in public and what great timing.

Is Adelaide really as bad as West Aussies say it is?

No way. Adelaide's great. The festival was huge and I found the people to be as friendly and layed back as Perth folk. Great chicks too.( But Perth's better )

When did you start out in comedy?

In Jan 1996. Just after I turned 18. I entered Triple j Raw Comedy ( of course ) and had no material but knew I wanted to give it an Auzzie go. I didn't win but did heaps good for a first attempt and considering I hadn't pre planned anything. I think they guessed I winged it 'cause they gave me a special mention at the end. It was the best fun and I fit right in because when you get a big group of comedians together, it's like a classroom of misbehaving kids. Brilliant! I could be myself without freaking people out. Although that's part of the fun.

What made you decide comedy was your thing?

After that I kept doing tryouts because I loved the people, atmosphere and of course, watching the comedy. Laughing is the best. I didn't think it was my thing until recently. I did over a year of try outs before I got any paid work. I freaked people out too much maybe. Far too much energy and some of the tangents I went on took us to strange lands that should never be ventured. But I've calmed down a lot since then. Can't you tell? Now I'm determined to make it my thing because I love it too much and I'm crap at everything else.

Where was the best gig you've ever had?

Tough call. So many good ones. So many bad ones too. Any that have the audience calling out for more, Tears and sore guts or when chicks come up and talk to me afterwards. But the Peter Holland gig is up there definitly.

What do you enjoy most about comedy?

Predictable answer but- Making people laugh. Life's too short to be serious about everything. I laugh at most stuff and I want evreryone else to as well.

Who are your influences?

I love Billy Connolly and Eddie Murphy. They're my top two I think.

What were the Adelaide audiences like for you?

Really great but small. All the Big Melbourne and International shows were on at the same time and Perth, "Where's that?" Everyone who did go Loved it.

Are you ever going to get your hair cut?

It's not high enough at the moment so I'm growing it but I did get my get my hair cut yesturday. Just shaved up the back. I know the hairdresser so she did it for two packs of pokemon stickers for $1 each. I gave her three. =o) I was afraid to ask whether they were for her son or her husband.

What was it like filling in for Glenn in MSG at stand up for East Timor last year?

Brilliant! Those guys are unreal. I was so flattered that they asked me. I'm just glad I didn't stuff it up for them.

Who would you say is the best West Aussie comedian? (I don't mind if you're vain and say yourself)

Questions like that can get me enemies if I don't pick them. The guys that I've laughed at most I think are Dave Callan, Stevie D, Malcom Dix, Werzel and every other WA comedian =o)

Do you like doing stand up by yourself or do you prefer to work in a team (like you did as I mentioned earlier)?

I love being in a team. With everyone's different comic views you come out with hillarious stuff.
I think on stage I'm more confident by myself 'cause if I muck up my act I'm only making me look bad. Thanx Dom! Hope the answers are OK. If not, Just change ,em. Ha Kidding.
