Billy Connolly interview

This interview was received back on the 22nd of August 2001. It was done via e-mail.

Describe your first time on stage.

My first time on stage was when I played Rochester in our school production of Jane Eyre. I loved it. My first time doing stand up was at the Sydney comedy Store. I was so terrified I could hardly breathe but the response was encouraging.

What was it like being chosen to be on The Smallest Room in the House?

I regard my work on that show as some of my best so it was great to have the opportunity. That show evolved into the stage show "At Last The TRuth About Everything" which I'm currently performing in Sydney. People really like the show and take away something meaningful as well as laughs.

How did you find being on Good News Week?

Great fun. I love to improvise and that show certainly allowed for left field departures.

How did growing up in Tasmania affect your life?

That's actually what a lot of "At Last The Truth About Everything" is about. I grew up in a very poor and tough neighbourhood. Creativity and performance became my escape so in a way it was a blessing.

What is your favourite, personal, television appearance?

I think my first appearance on "The Big Gig" stands out. The audience reaction was overwhelming and it basically won me my position as a regular cast member. I spoke about getting stoned and going to the 7/11 - a part of Australian culture that had never been spoken about by a comedian on Australian TV before.

What made you decide to become a comedian in the first place?

I always say that it's more like it chose me. I wanted to be a rock star for most of my youth but after trying comedy it became obvious that that's what people really loved me doing. Now I incorporate music with my comedy.

Where is the best venue you've ever performed in?

There have been some beauties. A room called Le Joke in Melbourne was sensational in the 80s. It was kind of innocent, a time before big money and TV had really entered the comedy world. I had nights of pure magic improvising with people like Peter Rowsthorn and Glen Robbins.

Could you reveal the truth about everything in less than an hour?

No, it actually takes about an hour and ten.

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were 5? If so, what?

An Aussie Rules football player. Now that's what my own son wants to be!

If you could change one thing about your life, what would you change?

I'd bring more peace into my own mind. I'm working on it!

If you died and could choose an animal to be reincarnated as, what would you choose and why?

A lion....maybe a dolphin...Perhaps a sea slug since they are both male and female in the one body. Endless amusement.

Can you speak any languages other than English?

School boy Fench and Latin (hmmmm, very useful!).

Do you hold any aggression towards anyone?

Too many to mention. But not for long.

What is your favourite festival?

Festival of the Winds at Bondi. I'd rather watch a kite.

Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Vow to bring joy to one person in the morning, and to ease the pain of one person in the afternoon. Know that the happiness of others is our own happiness and vow to practice joy on the path of service. Oh yeah, and try to get enough fibre.
